So often, the work of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) can be a polarizing topic on college campuses, yet on the minds of many of the students we serve. The role of leadership, especially within Academic Affairs, is critical for the future of Higher Education. To accomplish our objectives in a world of limited resources and expanding needs, we simply must coordinate our efforts through a shared vision” (Williams). This presentation includes honest reflections from another university’s experience pursuing Inclusive Excellence and practical tips for faculty as they seek to cultivate inclusive pedagogy in the classroom to strengthen the learning and engagement of all students.
Mrs. Tamra J. Malone currently serves as the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) at Biola University in La Mirada, California. She was appointed to this role in fall 2017. As CDO, Tamra has worked with Senior Leadership to provide an Institutional vision towards inclusive excellence; rooted in biblical principles and attainable through all facets of the University.
Tamra’s expertise includes institutional transformation toward inclusive excellence through strategic engagement, diversity education, administration and leadership, cultural programming, and increasing recruitment efforts of students from diverse backgrounds from multi-ethnic communities.
Tamra graduated from Biola University, completing her bachelor’s degree in business administration, emphasizing management in May 2005. Tamra received her master’s in science degree in counseling (with an emphasis in Student Development in Higher Education) from California State University, Long Beach State, in 2011. As a professional in Higher Education, Tamra has held numerous leadership roles at Biola University, where she has served for the past 16 years.
