IACBE President Presents at Quality Assurance Conference Sponsored by Chinese Ministry of Education
Lenexa, Kansas, USA (December 2013) – Mr. Dennis N. Gash, President of the IACBE, traveled to Xiamen, China on December 8-10, 2013 to present an invited session at an international conference on “Quality of Sino-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools” sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
Mr. Gash’s invited plenary session was entitled “The IACBE and Ensuring Quality in Sino-Foreign Partnerships through International Accreditation.”
Mr. Gash’s presentation first offered an overview of the IACBE and its mission, accreditation philosophy, and approach to quality assurance. He also described the IACBE’s value proposition for higher education institutions around the world and explained the IACBE’s outcomes-based approach to quality assurance and enhancement. Mr. Gash then addressed the educational impacts of the process of globalization and the ways in which it is dramatically transforming higher education. In particular, Mr. Gash described how transnational education and various types of international partnerships and collaborations, such as joint and dual degree programs, are significantly altering the higher education landscape. His presentation went on to explain the ways in which the IACBE’s outcomes-based philosophy of quality assurance, its flexible and adaptable process of international accreditation, its emphasis on continuous improvement, and the collaborative and cooperative nature of its approach to accreditation can help to ensure and advance quality in a variety of international partnerships and collaborations. Specifically, his presentation addressed the following issues relating to international cooperation of higher education institutions: (i) implementing consistent, world-class academic quality standards, (ii) maintaining institutional identity and respecting cultural differences, (iii) confirming programmatic and operational quality by partnering with other IACBE-accredited colleges and universities, (iv) adopting common best practices among partner institutions, and (v) ensuring transparency and accountability in cooperative programmatic agreements.
The conference was co-sponsored by Xiamen University’s Research Center for Sino-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools, the Department of Education of Fujian Province, and the Research Society of Chinese-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools of the China Association of Higher Education.
The conference was organized by Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Jimei University, and Xiamen University of Technology.
Hosted by and held on the campus of the Xiamen National Accounting Institute, the conference was attended by over 400 delegates.
