Each year in July, the IACBE sponsors and hosts our annual Summer Accreditation Institute. The three-day-long institute offers multiple sessions on various aspects of the IACBE’s accreditation process and advancing academic quality in business units and programs. The institute consists of a variety of accreditation workshops dealing with the IACBE’s process of quality assurance and advancement.
The 2015 Summer Institute will be held on July 15-17, 2015. For more information, please visit our 2015 IACBE Summer Institute webpage:
The workshops offered at the IACBE Summer Accreditation Institute vary each year, but previous workshops have included:
Developing a Comprehensive Outcomes Assessment Plan
Attendance at an assessment workshop is a requirement prior to (i) the submission of an application for candidacy status and (ii) the preparation of a self-study for reaffirmation of accreditation. This workshop focuses on how to design a comprehensive outcomes assessment plan that meets IACBE expectations for assessing student learning in your business programs and the operational effectiveness of your academic business unit. The workshop focuses on (i) the definition and purposes of outcomes assessment, (ii) the key points to keep in mind when preparing an assessment plan, (iii) the measurement instruments that can be used to assess both intended student learning outcomes and intended operational outcomes, and (iv) the use of outcomes assessment in measuring and advancing academic quality in your business programs. In addition, the IACBE’s new assessment plan template and a comprehensive example of a completed plan will be presented.
Writing Effective Intended Student Learning Outcomes and Designing Evaluation Rubrics for
Intended student learning outcomes at the program level are statements that describe the desired learning that students should have acquired and should be able to demonstrate at the end of a program of study. This workshop will identify the characteristics of good intended student learning outcomes and will provide guidelines for writing clear and effective statements of those outcomes. The workshop will then turn to the development of evaluation rubrics for assessing student work and performance in a variety of assignments and tasks. The focus of the workshop will be on designing rubrics that can not only be used for assigning a grade or mark to an individual assignment or task, but can also be employed for the purpose of program-level assessment, i.e., for assessing the program-level intended student learning outcomes in a business program.
Preparing an Effective Self-Study and Site Visit Preparation
Attendance at a self-study workshop is a requirement prior to the preparation of a self-study for first-time accreditation. Each of the IACBE’s Accreditation Principles are introduced and the ways in which to document compliance with them in the self-study are explained. In addition, the key points in preparing a complete and accurate self-study document are identified, and common pitfalls to avoid are pointed out. The logistics involved with preparing for an efficient site visit are also covered.
Site-Visit Peer Reviewer Training
A successful accreditation review process depends on a careful, thorough, and objective site visit conducted by a team of well-trained peer reviewers. As the IACBE grows both domestically and worldwide, a corps of competent, knowledgeable site-visit evaluators becomes increasingly essential. Workshop participants will learn how to evaluate self-studies effectively and how to conduct productive and efficient site visits. At the end of the day, you will have completed the requirements necessary to be assigned to a site-visit team.
Site-Visit Team Chair Training
An effective site-visit team requires a skilled and capable chair who can successfully coordinate the activities of the team. This workshop will focus on the responsibilities associated with chairing an accreditation site-visit team. The workshop is intended only for those who have completed a site-visit peer reviewer training session and have been a member of a site-visit team. Participation in this workshop is by invitation only.
Summer Accreditation Institute
The sessions are conducted by the staff members of the IACBE and are intended for both current and prospective members of the Assembly. The institute provides significant opportunities for professional development, networking, and the sharing of best practices in business education. Prospective members will find the IACBE Summer Accreditation Institute especially beneficial in learning more about the organization and its approach to quality assurance in business education.
